In Figure 2 the reverse situation is shown where the suction of the pump or pump bowls are set at the bottom of the well where the energy is dissipated back to the effective pumping water level around the well. This level is expected to be something greater than the actual pumping water level in the well because of friction losses and well inefficiencies. Where the formation permeability permits and the length of the well screen is long enough, then most of the flow may be in laminar flow throughout the entire column length of the well except possibly for the first few feet directly opposite the termination of the pump suction. If energy levels are high enough even with a long suction, there may be a distorted velocity curve where the lower portion of the well screen is in turbulent flow making the transition to laminar flow in the upper portion of the screen.
